Update total lessons in a specific module *less* dynamically?

Description
Currently, the only way to know whether there are any lessons at all is to download them from the server. IF somehow a lesson is deleted, you won't know, since the module says X of Y Lessons complete, where X is the total lessons the user has completed, but Y only refers to the total lessons currently in the module, not the total number of lessons expected to be in the module.
can we solve this?
