on pull out menu on tablet, touching area next to text does nothing

Description
When I pull out the menu on my Motorola Xoom running Team EOS Android 4.2.2, the pull out menu has a lot of empty space to the right of the menu text. Also, that empty space is not clickable, you have to click right on the text itself to make it work. This is confusing, it makes it seem like the menu is not responding.
