Orbot not "resolving" .onion's on android 4.4.4, nexus 5

Description
This is a strange bug that I can't quite place. Steps to reproduce:
1) Root nexus 5 with stock android 4.4.4
2) Grant root to Orbot
3) Setup transparent proxying for androIRC or yaaic (both irc apps)
4) try to connect to a .onion IRC server
5) watch as it errors out with "could not resolve"
I've tried transparent proxying and it didn't work on wifi or data. It is only able to resolve .onion's if I transparently proxy all apps.
I've tried this on multiple nexus 5's all with the same result.
